Description
Lord, by Your Cross and Resurrection offers a treasury of psalms, hymns and songs from the Eucharist during Holy Week. It represents the first ever complete-in-English version of the new chant resource, the Graduale Simplex of Pope Paul VI. Liner notes contain a description of each chant, describing the liturgical action and Biblical reference. Sung in English. Text available in separate booklet with musical scoring by Paul F. Ford.
ReviewBy: Joe Metzinger
Of particular interest is the processional hymn for the Christmas Mass as well as the fresh translation of the traditional hymn for Holy Thursday, ?Pange Lingua.? The strong performance of the Canticle of Moses from Exodus 15 is enhanced by use of finger cymbals and organal harmony. Likewise the Litany of Saints takes on a fresh sound with the addition of hand bells imitating carillon harmonics. The imaginative adaptation of the traditional dismissal melody for the Easter Alleluia might be valuable for congregations who find the traditional Alleluia melody too technically demanding. For the casual listener, this recording provides a wonderful meditation on these powerful texts of Holy Week. The extensive notes in the accompanying booklet include information on the origin of the chants and also valuable insights into the Biblical and liturgical sources of the texts. Since this collection is comprehensive, including all the chants for modern Catholic, Lutheran and Episcopalian liturgies, music directors and choirs will find it a valuable reference tool.
