ReviewBy: Benjamin Williams
This 2-CD set is among the latest in a now quite large series of Eastern Orthodox liturgical recordings from the Gega New label in Bulgaria. Overall the recordings are very good, offering a cross section of "Russian" liturgical chant and specifically Bulgarian renditions. This recording is no exception, offering the rich choral sound of 19th century Russian and Bulgarian repetoire! The quality is quite high, especially for a live recording. The choirs capture and convey all the excitement of a paschal Divine Liturgy, the singing is clear and the overall effect is both uplifting and festal. The recording wonderfully captures the opulent and resonant acoustics of the cavernous St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, as well as the interplay of clergy, chanters and choir. The price is also quite reasonable for an imported 2-CD set.
