A selection of the hymnology from the festal cycle of the Feast of the Nativity. This recording includes Orthodox chants and carols, beginning with the well-known Troparion and Kontakion for the Nativity, and followed by various hymns from the feast. This recording includes three hymns sung in "Eastern Church Chant," a monophonic tradition in Bulgaria for more than a thousand year. Liner notes contain a nice commentary in English and Cyrillic, but no hymn text.

This is a delightful compilation and can be summed up in one word: joy! The combination of liturgical hymns and carols from the Bulgarian chant tradition focus on the feast and associated traditions, providing a wide perspective of faith and practice. The choir performs with delicacy and reverence on hymns such as "O Gladsome Radiance" and the "Troparion for the Nativity" but equally takes it up a notch in singing the carols. Worth owning, and listened to often.
