Description
The Supplications of the Mother of God are hymns much beloved by the faithful of the Orthodox Church. In response to the constant urgings of the pious pilgrims we have recorded the small Supplicatory Canon confident that it will contribute to a more intense devotional relationship with the Mother of God, guardian of the Holy Mountain and protector of all Christians.
ReviewBy: Fr. Apostolos Hill
The monks of Simonopetra monastary have done a great service to those wishing to acquire a greater understanding of Orthodox Christian spirituality and Byzantine music with this recording. Rich in its handling of these quite familiar hymns and complete in its inclusion of portions of the service typically left out of such works (for example, entire Psalm readings), this CD is truly a worship experience. Their ease with the music further enhances the beautiful timbre and rhythm of the singers. One could easily forget that the Paraklesis is generally prayed in time of distress, so buoyant and lilting are the hymns. For those looking for a non-English project to test the waters of traditional byzantine music, this recording bridges the gap and makes accessible the rich treasury of monastic worship.
